It is always amazing to see what kind of creativity war brings out, especially in insurgencies and military equipment. In this example, believed to be from 2015, we have some insurgents who have modified a Toyota pickup truck to fit a BMP-1 turret.
The BMP-1 (with BMP-1 standing for Boyevaya Mashina Pjehoty 1, or Infantry fighting vehicle 1st serial number) itself is a Soviet based amphibious tracked infantry fighting vehicle. It was the first mass-produced infantry fighting vehicle made by the Soviet Union and it came into production in 1966. The BMP-1 is still used today, although more modified since the first model came out nearly 60 years ago.
The BMP-1 has a turret that is conical equipped with a fume extraction system and an electric traverse drive. There is a manual backup system should any of that fail, which is probably how this one is setup on the Toyota. The gunner’s station has a dual mode for day and night modes and a monocular periscope sight. The main gun fires 73mm rounds.
