The Irish Army Ranger Wing represents Ireland special operations force and operates under the Irish Defence Forces. The force was developed in 1980 to combat terrorism and thus functioned in a counter-terrorism role to start. Since then it has also evolved into a special operations force and served around the world including peacekeeping missions in Somalia, East Timor, Liberia, Chad and Mali.
