A multi-tool is a hand tool that integrates multiple distinct functions into a single object. The smallest are credit-card or key-sized units made to fit in a wallet or on a keychain, but others are made to fit in a trouser pocket or a pouch that is attached to your belt. A multi-tool is a great addition to any EDC (everyday carry), because it’s got so many tools in one, duh! But a lot of people still seem to opt for single tools. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with carrying a solid folding knife, but there are a lot of great uses for Multi-tool and the saved space is not the only benefit!
1. Space
The typical multi-tool will have about 12 different tools attached, all in one, fold-out tool. The typical multi-tool is approximately 4.5 inches in length and weighs 12.5 ounces, now imagine how much space 12 different tools would take and the additional weight? Try and fit the 3 major tools, a knife, pliers and a screwdriver in that form factor alone and you’ll feel the struggle. Of course some tools are smaller and some are bigger, but at the end of the day the one that is right for you will vary depending on what you need to get out of it.
2. Convenience
Look your multi-tool is not meant to replace your knife, or your screwdriver, or wrench. It’s meant to be a convenient, quick on the on go solution to get you out of a pinch. A solid multi-tool will do this without issue. That is what makes them so convenient to use.
3. Variety
Like I said earlier, your typical multi-tool will have 12 different tools on it. That is a lot of different tools to tackle pretty much any job you’d want to tackle on the go. My personal EDC multi-tool is a Leatherman Surge which packs 21 different tools in one nice package. It’s literally a tool box, in my pocket.
Those are my top 3 reasons for why everyone, including you, should have a multi-tool and carry it with you as part of your EDC roll out!
