US Marines assault Iraqi Republican Guard compound in 2003. This was before Baghdad fell.
The Iraqi Republican Guard was a branch of the Iraqi military that was in service from 1969 until 2003. This unit was predominately used by Saddam Hussein and was considered to be the elite troops of the Iraqi army. They reported directly to Saddam Hussein unlike the other branches of the Iraqi Army and as such they were considered the most loyal troops.
