The USAF Red Eagles documentary is about the 4477th Test and Evaluation Squadron (4477 TES) was a squadron in the USAF that operated under the Tactical Air Command. Although the unit is currently not active, it has a very rich and interesting history.

After WWII, the Cold War was brewing and the US was anxious to get the upper hand. Everyone knew the next war, would be an aircraft war so it was important to establish air superiority. As a result, the US along with various manufacturers were researching and developing various fighter jets. In order to better develop fighter jets, a large number of Soviet aircraft was also acquired.

In order to test the aircraft, Tactical Air Command established the 4477th TES Squadron on April 1st, 1977. The Squadron were Aggressors, Fighter Weapons School or Top Gun Instructors with many ranking as Majors, Captains and Instructors. The unit was disbanded at the end of the Cold War.
