The Australian Special Forces started out as commando units formed during World War II such as the M Special Unit of the Allied Intelligence Bureau. Since then, they have been expanded into their own forces and are involved in:

  • Direct action and advanced force operations
  • Long range reconnaissance
  • Counter-terrorism and special recovery
  • Maritime operations
  • Support to special operations
  • Aviation support
  • Air combat control
  • Special forces training
