The Australian Special Forces started out as commando units formed during World War II such as the M Special Unit of the Allied Intelligence Bureau. Since then, they have been expanded into their own forces and are involved in:
- Direct action and advanced force operations
- Long range reconnaissance
- Counter-terrorism and special recovery
- Maritime operations
- Support to special operations
- Aviation support
- Air combat control
- Special forces training
