This film, Patch Wearers: The Real Topgun, from the US Department of Defense delves into the lives of instructors at the United States Navy’s Top Gun school teaching air to air warfare operations to the Navy’s fighter pilots. The Top Gun program, officially known as the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program, was founded in 1969 after North Vietnamese fighter pilots were seen to have an edge over American pilots. The Top Gun program turned the tables and resulted in the excellent cadre of pilots that the American Navy has today.
