It semes like as soon as someone asks for a 5.56 rifle recommendation, people automatically just resort to the AR-15. Honestly, I am genuinely shocked, and pleasantly surprised, to hear or read anyone recommending anything. Don’t be alarmed, I’m not hear to bash the AR-15, it is certainly a fantastic platform and there is a good reason why it’s so recommended. The AR-15 is easy, cost effective, and carries endless possibilities so I understand fully why one would recommend it over other rifles. However, there are a ton of good rifles out there that should be considered too, especially if you want something other than an AR-15.
CZ Bren 2 MS Carbine
I am a little biased to the CZ Bren 2 MS Carbine as I personally own one and for good reason. I’ve covered reasons why CZ is a great firearms manufacturer in the past and one of those reasons is their product reliability is incredible. The Bren 2 MS Carbine, is no different. There is a reason why military and police services such as the Czech Armed forces and Frances GIGN anti-terrorist unit have also started issuing this rifle. This rifle feels rock solid, with a good finish. My favourite part about this rifle are the ergonomics which I find superior to the AR-15 (regardless of what mods you do). It has good accuracy, and is a fun gun to shoot!
SIG MCX
SIG is another top notch company that has built a reputation on quality. The MCX is no different and one advantage to it, like the AR-15, it has a ton of different configurations and possibilities. In fact, SIG claims there are over 500 different possible configurations wit the MCVX. In terms of shooting, the MCX mimics the AR-15, so if you are switching from one it’ll be an easy transition. The charging handle, safety, magazine release, bolt release and forward assist are much like the AR-15.
Steyr AUG
One of the most iconic rifles, next to the AR-15, mostly due to it being featured in several video games such as Call of Duty and Counter-Strike. It is also one of, if not the most, popular bullpup rifle designs ever made. The Steyr AUG is successful because it’s ergonomics are excellent, and it’s clean running short-stroke gas piston makes it extremely reliable. The AUG entered service in 1978 and there have been only a few changes since then, and for good reason… if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!
Happy shooting!
