Pardon, a tomahawk? Why would anyone need a tomahawk? Stay with me.
First off, a Tomahawk is a singlehanded axe that can be used for a variety of tasks and resembles a hatchet with a straight shaft. Tomahawks have been around for ever, with some dating back to the 17th century, with various different cultures. Most notably, many indigenous peoples of North America have literally lived by a Tomahawk. They have been used as tools and weapons with great results.
Ok so why the Spyderco Warrior Hawk? This one in particular is designed by Laci Szabo and is the perfect combination of ergonomics and aesthetics. Laci has refined this Tomahawk to be reliable while facing different challenges such as utilitarian cutting, breaching and close quarter combat.
It has been machined from D2 tool steel while the blade is cloaked in a titanium carbonitride coating which will protect against any corrosion. This is a tough blade that is faceted for maximum penetration. The head is forged from 5160 tool steel. On the opposite head, there is a multi-purpose spike that can easily puncture tires or act as a “break-and-rake” tool for breaching windows.
It’s amazing how well it sits in your hand, and how natural it feels whether you are chopping up timber or about to breach a house or puncturing a tire of the vehicle on a high risk stop. With it’s overall size it is also an easy carry for the avid hunter, law enforcement and military.
Which brings me to the only negative point, these are not cheap with the average cost in the US hovering around $350 and in Canada around $400. Can you find a cheaper Tomahawk? Yes. Will it be as good as this one? No.
