It seems to be a debate as old as time, what is the better vest, internal or external? The debate has split private contractors, operators, competitive shooters, security and military personnel equally. External vests will allow MOLLEE attachments and more storage space but an internal vest sits concealed under layers. Which is better? Let’s break it down.

What does the job call for?

For some jobs, you simply don’t have a choice due to either policy or attire required. For example, many police services and agencies have strict policy guidelines regarding when, where and how vests are to be worn. Some have even outright banned external vests for front line officers, although mostly for public appearance reasons (less “militaristic” look). For private contractors and security operators, you may have to use an internal vest due having to wear more formal attire such as a suit. On the flip side, in certain situations, an external vest with the molle system is really the only one that makes sense because of how much gear you can gear, and how easily you can toss it onto your body.

Safety

There is a concern that an external vest can be easily ripped off during a hand to hand combat exchange while an internal vest would be difficult to remove as it is underneath other clothing. Obviously, this would be a terrible situation to be involved as all your gear and possible use of force options would go flying across the room you are in during a struggle. With that said, as both a military vet and someone who is an active LEO and been involved in my fair share of physical fights I have yet to have my external vest to go flying off of me.

Comfort

Honestly, this really does come down to personal preference. Those who prefer internal vests will say they are more comfortable and warmer in the winter months (if that is you are some where it is cold). Those who prefer external vests will say that it’s easy to make adjustments on the fly and you can reduce the load on say a gun belt, by placing items on a vest.

There you have it. Ultimately, it will come down to personal preference and it’s honestly not a bad idea to have both options available so you are prepared for whatever situation you are facing.
