With all that is going on in the world right now, it is hard not to consider another World War actually being a possibility. Even more so, with the increased activity in the Ukraine conflict and specifically around Chernobyl, it seems a nuclear explosion could be a possibility too. So much so that many governments around the world are alerting their citizens and putting out guides on how to survive a nuclear explosion.

Nuclear explosions can cause significant damage and casualties not just from the initial blast but also from the heat and radiation that follow. These explosions are of course caused by nuclear devices that range from small portable device that might be seen in a terrorist attack to a weapon system carried by a missile. Often times, they occur within a few minutes of a warning or without any warning at all. Here are some tips on what you can do!

Get inside!

Seriously, this is one of the most important things you can do in the event of a nuclear explosion. Make your way to the nearest building to avoid radiation. If at all possible, choose a brick or concrete structure. Immediately remove contaminated clothing and wipe or wash unprotected skin. If the structure you are in has a basement, you should head into it and get into the middle of the basement. You want to stay away from any outer walls and the roof of the structure.

If you are outside when a detonation occurs you can protect yourself by taking cover behind anything. Even if you lie face down to the ground, this will offer protection. If you are in a vehicle try to duck down as much as possible.

Stay inside!

Now is not the time to be running around and unless a local authority says otherwise, you need to stay inside. Even if you are split up from your family, avoid the urge to try to reunite with them at this time. If you have any pets, do not let them outside either.

While inside, focus on ensuring you have cleaned any contaminated or exposed skin with soap and water. You should ensure you really scrub your hair as it is more likely to hold fallout. Try to stay hydrate and eat food however do not consume anything that was outdoors and uncovered as it will probably be contaminated with fallout.

Listen to communications

The radio will be your best friend during these times. Tune into any media station that is available for official information. It is a great idea to keep battery operated or hand crank radios around for this reason. Do not rely on a cellphone or television or the internet as it is almost certain these would be done in the event of an explosion.

Stay safe!
