ThruNite was founded in 2009 so it’s relatively a new company in the flashlight market. The company was founded by David Chen, who had dropped out of college and set his dream of making a better flashlight. David launched ThruNite originally in his native China before expanding to global markets. The name, ThruNite, is short fo “through Night” which is on course for the company’s motto of guiding you through the night”. Since it’s launch the company has produced a variety of flashlights that have caught the attention of Everyday Carry (EDC) folks and have been very respectable lights. Today specifically, we are going to look at the Thrunite BSS V4 Tactical flashlight.
The ThruNite BSS V4 Tactical Flashlight is marketed as a “super bright” and “light weight” flashlight featuring a maximum output of 2523 lumens. It achieves this using a SST70 LED bulb which can also produce a light up to 250 meters. The BSS V4 weighs only 91 grams and is USB rechargeable which makes it very easy to keep running on the go.
The technical specifications are:
- Led: SSt70*1
- Working Voltage: 2.7-8.4V
- Material: Aluminum Alloy
- Dimensions: 146.5mm*28mm*25.4mm
- Weight: 91g
- Max output: 2523 lumens
- Max distance: 250 meters
Personally, I didn’t expect much from this light before I got it as there are already a ton of comments online that seemed to have mixed reviews on the BSS V4. When it finally came in I wasn’t bombarded with a flashy box or any sort of marking. In fact, it came in what was fairly simple packaging with a recycled carboard box. I was pleasantly surprised to see ThruNite ships the BSS V4 with a ton of extras including:
- ThruNite 311 mAh button top 18650 battery
- Lanyard
- 2 spare o-rings
- 2 spare USB charging port covers
- Spare switch boot
- Manuals
- USB A to micro USB charging cable
- Holster
- Red light filter lens/bezel assembly
- Pocket clip
I think that’s a pretty intense lights that includes a ton of bonuses not included with other flashlights. But obviously, with any flashlight, the most important aspect is the functionality. As soon as I picked up the BSS V4, I felt it was comfortable in my hands. This is a light that is easy to hold overhand, underhand, or a several other ways. Like most tactical style flashlights, the BSS V4 features a dual switch setup with the rear switch being a traditional button and the front switch handlining the mode switching.
For a flashlight that costs around $60, I was impressed to see ThruNite did not cut corners to save costs. There were no awkward gaps, tool marks or unfinished edges on the flashlight I reviewed. All the fit and finish was nice and personally I think the matte look is one mostly reserved for more expensive flashlights. This gives the BSS V4 a higher end look overall. If you don’t notice this just by holding the fliashlight, you’ll notice it as soon as you power it on. I think the cool white LED light provides a great throw. You get several different modes including firefly, low, medium, high and turbo which allow the BSS V4 to adapt to situations just as much as you need it.
In conclusion, it’s going to be very hard to beat the BSS V4 in terms of quality and price. I think this is a great flashlight that easily competes with other lights in it’s price range as well as the lights in a couple price ranges up. 9/10.
