If you are someone who camps a lot, lives in an isolated place, or wants to be prepared for a natural disaster, then you’ve probably thought about an emergency bag. These are essentially kits that will cover you in situations you cannot get to a store, call for help or have a spot to lay your head. A lot of people keep these kits in their vehicles which is a great idea. Obviously the kits should be designed for your use and where you are located but there are some must haves that every kit should include.
First aid kit
A basic first aid kit is essential to any emergency bag no matter what you are going to be doing or where you are. The ability to treat injuries is essential to survival especially if you can’t get to a doctor or hospital.
Flashlight
If you can’t see at night you are seriously limiting your chance of survival and increasing danger. Flashlights are so cheap these days too that you really have no excuse to not have one. Pack a few extra batteries for it too.
Multi-tool
I’ve preached multi-tools on here long enough, get one. You will be glad you had a variety of tools and the fact that it’s so compact means you won’t need a spare tool bag.
Folding knife
The number one tool for any survival is a good blade. Get a decent folder and you’ll have a compact knife that can handle a variety of tasks.
1.5-2.0 L water bottle
Water is key to survival, it’s an essential. A good water bottle, that is measurable will come in handy to make sure you are getting your fluids and that you know how much you are getting.
2,000 calories of food
Obviously you’ll need food, and you can pack it in a bag depending on preference. Some people will go for a trail mix solution, packing a variety of nuts. Others will go for a MREs, or protein bars. Personal preference for this one.
Clothing
Have some spare pieces of clothing so in case something gets wet or ripped, you have something to change into.
Signalling mirror
An easy way of communicating with first responders or search parties.
Ziplock bags and Trash bags
Pack different sizes for food storage, water collection and to even protect clothes or things you don’t want to get wet.
Obviously there are other items you can pack depending on your situation, but this is a good starting point.
