Before we dive too deep into this I’m going to lead with a disclaimer, VERIFY with your local laws that these are legal to own before you purchase anything. I also want to advise, learning some form of mixed martial arts is one of the best ways to defend yourself. With that said, I have always been an advocate of a conceal carry or home defense firearm but I do understand that it is not legal everywhere, not everyone wants to get a license, and some people just don’t like lethal. Not to worry, I do have some self defense weapons that might work for you!
Self-defense is an important aspect of personal safety and security. While there are a number of lethal weapons available for self-defense, not everyone feels comfortable carrying or using them. In some situations, it may not be appropriate or legal to use a lethal weapon for self-defense, which is where non-lethal self defense weapons come into play.
Non-lethal self defense weapons are designed to incapacitate an attacker without causing permanent harm or injury. They provide an effective means of protecting oneself without the risk of potentially taking a life, making them a suitable option for those who prefer a more non-violent approach to self-defense.
Sabre MK-3 Red Pepper Gel
I can very clearly recall the day I had to get sprayed in order to graduate from the academy. It was the worst experience I’ve ever had, I can assure you of that. People frequently ask me if I’d rather be sprayed or tasered. TASER ALWAYS. Oleoresin of Capsicum (OC), an oily component of spicy peppers, is essentially what pepper spray is made of. The inflammation of mucous membranes of the nose, mouth, lungs, and skin results in a tremendous lot of discomfort. The MK-3 Red Pepper Gel is a wise choice because it keeps the OC in a steady stream, ensuring that even if there is wind blowback (another reason I detest OC), you won’t ingest it. With a range of 10–12 feet, this is simple and quick to deploy.
A Folding Knife
I’ve talked about the importance of an EDC folder and one of the reasons they are so great is because they can be used for self defense. Now I understand it can be a lethal weapon too but generally speaking due to the blade length, you are more likely to cause serious injury rather than death to an attacker. As far as what knife to go with, I recommend you check out our guide on folding knives here as it honestly hard to pick just one here.
TASER Pulse Plus
Tasers are a great non lethal weapon, especially in a self defense situation! With a law enforcement background, I can attest to how well they work at immobilizing subjects (I have also been tasered myself) that would otherwise require lethal force. The TASER Plus Plus is basically a civilian version of the product law enforcement agencies carry. This taser works like the others, point and shoot but it does also come with a Noonlight application that will allow you to pair your TASER Plus Plus with your cellphone. Once you deploy the taser, it’ll communicate with your phone and dispatch police to you.
Flashlight
Flashlights are a great EDC item for many reasons, including self defense. Some flashlights have a “tactical edge” on one side that can be used as a blunt force weapon or to smash windows. There are many flashlights out there that will have these properties and it honestly just comes down to personal choice. If you need recommendations check out our list here.
Blunt Force Weapon
These are basically your bats of the world. They aren’t terrible, in fact they can be very effective however most of them are very bulky. You aren’t going to walk around downtown with a bat or a crowbar in your hands. However, having one in your vehicle is not a bad idea and will still be accessible should a situation arise near it.
Stay safe!
