Mechanix is a company that specializes in gloves, it’s how the company started out. It actually started making high quality work gloves for mechanics and other trades folks, with the company really coming to light in 1991 when they became an official supplier for NASCAR. But Mechanix really came to the tactical world in the mid 2000s as conflict raged in the Middle East. Many military members began to look for more comfortable wear that didn’t sweat their hands or their wallets. The glove of choice quickly became Mechanix Wear’s Original glove which was also promptly introduced in several colors such as black, grey, and various camos.

I will start by saying the Mechanix Wear Original glove does not pretend to be something it’s not. They really don’t market this as a tactical glove, although it certainly is better than many of the competitors who do. With that said it’s not designed to have flash protection or thermal protection, which some such as military personnel might need or want. Now that we got that out of the way, let’s dive into where the Mechanix Wear Original Glove really shines.
Shooting. That’s right, if you were looking for a glove that has great tactile perception and grip support, this is your glove. This glove was engineered to provide an enhanced grip, providing hand protection without sacrificing dexterity to do so. This goes back to the company’s roots as a mechanic glove were grip and dexterity were important while providing decent hand protection.
As a result of the focus on dexterity you’ll find the fit is true to size. If you wear a large, you’ll want to get this in a large. If you feel they are a little loose, you can use the adjustable Velcro strap on the wrist to tighten them up. If you are worried about the sizing, the break in will make sure they feel snug. The short cuff endings with the adjustable Velcro strap end just behind the wrist which will make sure should you wear a watch it stays accessible. Unlike other tactical gloves, because the strap is Velcro it won’t wear out like the elastic ones which naturally loose elasticity.
These gloves will feel softer and break in easier, but don’t be alarmed they are tough. The Mechanix originals will shield from minor abrasions, heat and provides a barrier from wind and mild temperature drops. The reinforced joints on the back of the index finger will allow your fingers to bend and move without causing stress on the glove, which speaks to the durability of it. On the sides of the fingers you’ll notice there is a thin mesh material which promotes ventilation but conceals it in a way so when the temperature drops it’s not just freezing your fingers. The whole package put together feels strong but doesn’t make your fingers feel constricted.
The Mechanix Wear Originals will allow you to easily flick out a knife, reload guns, and shoot with smooth trigger pulls without issues. You’ll be able to use the radio or communication headset controls without pressing multiple buttons at the same time. If you’re trying to work a touchscreen phone, tablet or computer, you’ll find that it will even work with some of these. Although not sold or marketed as working with touchscreen devices, I was able to use my iPhone and Dell laptop touchscreen without issue.
So what about the cost? Well, a pair of these will set you back about $20-$30… yeah that’s right, for literally half the cost of the competition you can get a pair of these. I get 2-3 years out of mine, but it’s gotten to the point where I just buy a couple pairs. I have a pair for work, a pair for the range, and a pair for the garage. Go ahead, grab a pair yourself, you won’t regret it.
