CamelBak is an American outdoors equipment company based out of California that is best known for it’s hydration products. Specifically the company focused very early on hydration packs and creating different productions for the US military and law enforcement agencies around the world.
Their CamelBak Elixir product is essentially an electrolyte drink at first sight but it’s actually more than that. Elixir contains a special blend which CamelBak came up with containing electrolytes, vitamins and minerals to help your body maintain it’s fluid balance for optimal performance and metabolic functioning. This is essential if you are a first responder such as law enforcement or military personnel, especially if you are operating in hot climates as electrolytes allow your body to re-hydrate much quicker.
Let’s look at the main ingredients here. CamelBak Elixir uses three different sweeteners which are Sorbitol, Acesulfame potassium and Sucralose. Berry and Lemon Lime Ingredients: Citric acid, sorbitol, sodium bicarbonate, artificial (berry) and natural (lemon lime) flavors, sodium carbonate, sodium citrate, potassium bicarbonate, sodium benzoate, ascorbic acid, calcium carbonate, magnesium sulfate, sodium benzoate, polyethylene glycol, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, acesulfame potassium, sucralose, manganese gluconate.
Orange Ingredients: Citric acid, sorbitol, sodium bicarbonate, natural flavors, sodium carbonate, potassium bicarbonate, sodium benzoate, ascorbic acid, sodium benzoate, polyethylene glycol, acesulfame potassium, sucralose, taurine, caffeine, acesulfame potassium, inositol, d-glucoronolactone, guarana, biotin, calcium-d-pantothenate, niacinamide, pyridoxine hydrochloride, ridoflavin-5-phosphate, cyanocobalamin.
CamelBak Elixir are self-dissolving tablets which come in a small plastic tube that contains 12 tablets for about $10. There are 3 different flavours including orange, lemon-lime and berry. One tablet dissolves very nicely in 24oz of water. You can also break up the tablets for various water bottle use. Once you pop the tablet in the bottle it’ll fizz up a little and dissolve. Once that is complete you are ready to drink. I found all the flavours to be excellent, with only a mild sweetness that is not overpowering or sugary in nature like some of the other tablets on the market.
Overall, I found the taste to be quite good, especially when mixed with cold water. There is no mess as the tablets are self contained and dissolve only when mixed with water which is great compared to some of the powdered versions of electrolyte drinks. As far as performance, it definitely assists but how much will vary on how much stress your body is under. If you are looking for an electrolyte drink, I would recommend CamelBak’s Elixir drink tablets! 7.5/10.
