Buck Knives makes knives that range from budget economy stuff all the way to the top of the line blades. They have been around for just about forever and to back their products they always offer a “forever warranty”. This means that they will repair or replace any knife that is defective so long as its not from normal wear, misuse or modification.

This knife features a drop point blade which means it has a strong and thick point for heavier tasks. The top of the blade drops down toward the tip, which prevents accidental punctures. The handle is made from G10 material, which is pretty amazing considering this knife can often be found for less than $20. G10 material is great because is it almost indestructible, and is resistant to heat, cold, chemicals, impact and other abuse.

Here are the specs:

  • Blade: Satin finish, 7Cr17MoV stainless steel
  • Blade Shape: Drop point
  • Blade Thickness: 0.110”
  • Blade Length: 3 3/8” (8.6 cm)
    Weight: 3.7oz (104.9g)
  • Handle: G10
  • Carry System: Pocket clip
  • Origin: Imported (Chinese made)

I do like that there is a thumb feature to facilitate one-handed opening. Of course, the locking mechanism prevents it from easily being able to close one-handed although it is possible if you take the time. The pocket clip screws protrude out and can get stuck on your pocket. Overall, the knife looks great, and it fits in the hand easily thanks to the large G10 handle. The Buck 251 Maverik OD actually does not feel like an economy knife in your hands.

The Buck 251 Maverik OD came to me razor sharp which as impressive. I quickly got to work on testing the blade and found that even for 7Cr17MoV steel, this blade does well. This is a cheap steel that has great corrosion resistance and hardness which means it’ll have some edge retention issues. However, this is a really easy knife and steel to sharpen! Thanks to that handle and the fit of the knife in your hand, I actually enjoyed sharpening it and using it again. It’s a very easy knife to use for pretty much any style of slicing or cutting something.

Overall, the Buck 251 Maverik OD will often be found on sale or considered an economy knife however I would say it’s a bargain. This is a knife that provides great materials such as a G10 handle and 7Cr17MoV steel (which at this price point is a deal) in one awesome package. I think Buck Knives did a great job putting this together and if you were in the market for a $15-30 folding knife, the Buck 251 Maverik OD is the knife you should get. 8.5/10.
