There is no doubt about it, every law enforcement agency should have patrol rifles in service. Patrol rifles have become essential after school shootings such as Columbine and of course since 9/11. Most of the time, these are semi-automatic rifles that have a barrel length of 16” to 20” and are chambered in .223. Here are our favorites, heads up they are all AR-15 variants.
Colt Enhanced Patrol Rifle EPR
The Colt Enhanced Patrol Rifle (EPR) is the next development of the most dependable, completely field-tested patrol rifle in the world. It was built for the rigorous use of those who defend our communities every day. Along with the incredibly tough Magpul MBUS Pro Series front and rear back up sights, B5 Bravo buttstock, and an extended handguard that can accept modular rail segments for attaching a multitude of pro-grade optics, lighting, and ergonomics-enhancing accessories.
Sig Sauer M400 Pro
Sig Sauer may market the M400 Pro as more of a military rifle, but for some of those reasons it is also a great law enforcement patrol rifle. The M400 Pro is chambered for 5.56 NATO rounds and has a barrel length of 16 inches. It utilizes a direct impingement gas system making it a much more reliable rifle. Finally, the rifle also has a free-floating, full-length M-Lok handguard. The platform is completed by an improved trigger, a six-position telescopic stock, and a rotating lock bolt.
Smith & Wesson M&P Sport II
The cheapest option on the list, the Smith & Wesson M&P Sport II still has a lot to offer. It can come chambered in either 5.56 NATO or .223 rounds and has a 16” barrel length. The Sport II has a dust cover and a forward assist to improve dependable performance in harsh tactical conditions. Both the upper and lower receivers are made of hard coat black anodized 7075 T6 aluminium. The lower includes an integrated trigger guard, while the upper has a full Picatinny rail. The barrel has a 1 in 9″ twist and a long-lasting, corrosion-resistant ArmorniteTM finish. For dependable performance and simple maintenance, the gas key, bolt carrier, and firing pin are chromed. A 6-position telescopic buttstock enables the shooter to alter the fit to perfectly fit their stature or attire. The adjustable A2 post front sight and Magpul® Folding MBUS® rear sight are standard equipment on the M&P15 Sport II Semi-Automatic Rifle.
