This is recorded footage from the Russian side. It is dated from 1992 or 1993 and it shows Russian troops carrying out combat operations in Tajikistan.

Tajikistan was in a heavy civil war after the collapse of the Soviet Union and it led to massive devastation. It is estimated some 157,000 civilians died and over 800,000 were made into refugees.

The Russians decided to back the former communist group called the Popular Front who was operating against various groups such as the Islamist militias and United Tajik Opposition (UTO). With the backing of Russia, the Popular Front was able to defeat the opposition groups although they also earned several claims of ethnic cleansing and human rights violations along the way.
