bullets and gun on black velvet desk

So you’ve decided to finally get a gun? Excellent decision! There is nothing that makes me happier than hearing a citizen is making the decision to practice safe firearm ownership and use. That is assuming you have go through the proper channels to obtain a license (if required) and make sure you can legally own a firearm.

If you have, the next step is to actually go out and purchase a gun which can carry so many mixed feelings of excitement and a bit of nerves. There are endless options when purchasing a gun and while many want to own one for personal and home protection that does not necessarily narrow it down. With that said, here are some tips that will help you narrow down your first gun.

Are you comfortable with pulling the trigger when you will need to?

I always want people to understand that this is the most important question a person who wants to carry a gun should ask themselves. If you are not ready to pull the trigger with the gun you decide to purchase in the moment of life and death, than there really is no point in getting a gun.

Do your homework

Once you’ve decided that you will pull that trigger in a life or death situation, it’s time to find a gun! There are many types, makes and models of guns so it’s important to pick one that suits you. Don’t worry, there is definitely a gun out there for you. I recommend you decided what it is exactly that you would like to use your gun for and then research firearms that fit those requirements. Then go out and buy the gun you pick.

Get your gear

You’ve got the gun, now make sure you get all the gear and accessories for the gun too. While some accessories might be unique to the gun you, there are basic accessories that every gun owner should have. That starts with a good gun cleaning kit that will make sure your gun functions properly. You should also get a gun case to store and carry your gun and a gun holster (if you are allowed to conceal and carry). If your gun has a magazine, you should get additional mags for it.

Consider training and get time at the range

Every new gun owner should be spending time at the range as this will get you comfortable with shooting your gun and make you a proficient shooter. If you want to really build your skills, it’s not a bad idea to consider some one on one training which a qualified instructor.

Happy shooting!
