HOUSTON — Newly released video shows a shootout between two officers and a suspect who was pulled over during a traffic stop earlier this month.
Dashcam and bodycam videos show two Houston Police Department officers exchanging words with suspect Jimmy Caston Bryan, who was wanted on an outstanding drug warrant, Click2Houston.com reported. “Is that an ankle monitor?” one officer asks Bryan. “Yes sir, it is,” Bryan responds. The officer asked Bryan for identification, but he says he doesn’t have anything on him.
The officer then instructs Bryan to take off his seatbelt and get out of the vehicle. “I’m telling you to take off your seatbelt and step out,” the officer said. Seconds later, Bryan opens the car door and starts shooting at the officers, striking one officer, identified as Officer J. Sallee, in the pelvic area. Sallee is expected to recover. The second officer, according to the report, was not wounded.
Officers struck Bryan multiple times, who was taken to the hospital in critical condition. He was charged with: The use or carry of a firearm during and in relation to drug trafficking crime and possession with intent to distribute meth, and Two counts of aggravated assault of a public servant.
Houston Police Department Chief Troy Finner told Click2Houston Sallee’s ballistic vest and flashlight “may have saved his life.” The below videos, which are age-restricted on YouTube, were released by the Houston Police Department and show the incident from several angles, including when Officer Sallee was hit and responding officers placed a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.
