Short answer yes, a shotgun is the best home defense. Sure one could argue a handgun is great because it’s compact, but you don’t pack as near of a punch as a shotgun. Others will argue the AR is the ultimate gun due to accuracy, but it’s just not as simple as a shotgun which would be nicer in close quarter combat.

Pump shotguns are simple, they are very easy to use and you do not have to have much practice to become a good shot. A shotgun casts a wide shot pattern that is more forgiving in terms of accuracy than say your handgun or AR rife. In a high stress situation such as a home invasion, even the avid shooter is going to have an escalated heart rate making a shot more difficult.

With a shotgun you also have the advantage of various ammo capabilities. You can get birdshot, slugs, and buckshot fairly easily and affordably. Most importantly you can cross load different ammunition, so that you can have the first two rounds to be slugs, and the roads after to be buckshot or however you’d like. You can also get different magazine capabilities that will make loading easy and allow you to not stress about how much ammo you have.

Maintenance on shotguns is easy due to the basics mechanics of a shotgun. Even a newbie to guns won’t have much difficult taking apart the average shotgun and cleaning it. If you need parts or upgrades, there is a large market available due to the popularity of shotguns. You won’t be waiting for parts or really have to look long. This also makes it incredibly easy to customize for home use, with different adjustable stocks so it makes it easier to maneuver around close quarter combats. You can also add a sight such as a ghost ring rear sight which will be a vast improvement over iron sights. Of course for home defense I’d also strongly recommend a light for your shotgun, in case you have to defend your home at night.

If you want to protect your home with a firearm, do yourself a favor and get a shotgun.
