This is a story that has unfolded quite a bit the last few days and I suspect we will hear more in the upcoming days so things here might change. For those unaware, the president of Haiti, Jovenel Moise, was assassinated on July 7th, 2021, at 1am at his residence. A group of 28 foreign operators/mercenaries are being blamed for the assassination. What’s even more interesting is that allegedly the operators disguised themselves as US DEA agents to get in and complete the assassination.
Before we get to the attack, we need to understand why this happened. During Moise’s time in office it’s no secret there has been serious political unrest and violence, especially with anti-government protests. His term in office was heavily disputed and this sparked constitutional crisis. This is the background and the motivation to the attack.
On July 7th, 2021, at approximately 1:00am, the operators arrived on scene. Video taken by residents living nearby shows the voice of a man speaking in English, claiming over a megaphone to be a member of the US Drug Enforcement Administration. This seemed to have caused confusion amongst Moise’s guard. By doing so, they were able to contain and disarm Moise’s security and guards.
Once arriving at the door, operators/mercenaries stormed Moise’s home in Port-au-Prince. They began shooting into his office and bedroom, while ransacking the rooms in the process. Moise was shot multiple times and killed at the scene. It is reported he was shot a total of 12 times in his chest, arms, right leg, left hip, and left eye. Evidence at the scene revealed several 9mm and 5.56mm bullets.
After the attackers fled a police chase ensued and they were cornered at a building. A shootout and standoff with the operators/mercenaries and police took police for at least a day. Three Colombian men were killed during the gunfight and 18 more Colombians and two Haitian-Americans were arrested. They were identified as the operators/mercenaries responsible for the assassination. It is believed that five of the attackers are still on the run and there is an active manhunt for them.
I have many questions regarding the training and preparedness of the presidents guard to be so confused by someone shouting they are DEA on a megaphone. Obviously they were lacking proper training and were not seriously prepared to defend the president or any VIP. Furthermore the operators/mercenaries themselves did not prepare enough if they come in that hot, creating that much noise and then failed to have a proper extraction plan. The main question, over why and who was behind funding this group is still unanswered but perhaps the most important question to yet be answered.
